Joe Roberts remains perfect in AMA Pro SuperSport starts Hot

California Superbike School’s product Joe Roberts is only 16 years old and stands a mere five feet, seven inches tall. However, he has become a very large presence in his first year of competing in the AMA Pro Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport division with three wins in three career starts this season.

The latest victory came at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in his first time ever racing at the track. Aboard his Honda CBR600RR, Roberts edged RoadRace Factory’s Tomas Puerta, the class points leader and Yamaha rider, by .117 seconds in the 16-lap race that saw a red flag at its midpoint following a crash involving Houston Superbikes’ rider Travis Ohge. National Guard’s Corey Alexander (Suzuki) finished third to earn a spot on the podium.

While this is Roberts’ first season racing SuperSport he is in his third year of competing in the MotoGP Red Bull Rookies Cup. He has five years of road racing on full tracks behind him, starting at age 11 with WERA and USGPRU.

Roberts rallies for win

Displaying veteran poise and savvy, Roberts prevailed in a three-way scrap with Puerta and Alexander. After leading the way in the early going with Puerta, Roberts overtook Puerta several laps after the re-start following Ohge’s accident and shot to the front – temporarily. Meanwhile, Alexander applied the heat in third place.

Puerta executed a late pass of Roberts and seemed to have himself in good position for the win entering the final lap. However, the Los Angeles native Roberts executed an audacious move in the corkscrew section of the track to grab the lead. Puerta passed back before Roberts outran him off the final turn for the victory in perhaps the weekend’s most thrilling finish.

Despite only three series appearances, Roberts finds himself ninth in the West Division points race with 32 points. That’s called maximizing your potential return.

Puerta builds points lead

Despite his second-place finish, Puerta all but sewed up the West Division points title and, with 113 points, is 40 clear of second-place Jeffrey Tigert. Puerta paced a Yahama party in this event – eight of the Top 10 an 11 of the Top 15 finishers were aboard Yamaha rides.

Alexander, the East Division points leader, turned in a strong performance aboard the National Guard Celtic Racing Suzuki GSX-R600. Baby Appleseed’s Jeffrey Tigert ended in fourth followed by MotoSport.com’s Stefano Mesa in fifth.

Ohge injury update

Portland, OR rider Travis Ohge, 19, crashed and, after being treated trackside by medical personnel, was transferred by helicopter to the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose where he was admitted unconscious and listed in critical condition. He regained consciousness on Wednesday, July 24 and was breathing on his own. His condition was upgraded to serious and he was relocated from the SCVMC head trauma center.
