Cameron Beaubier captures 2013 AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike series championship Hot

Cameron Beaubier

Sports Info

Cameron Beaubier extended his season for the ages Sept. 14-15, winning both races in The New Jersey Lottery Devil's Showdown at New Jersey Motorsports Park to clinch the 2014 AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Series championship for the first time.

Beaubier's dream season left all others with the harsh reality they were battling for second place at every stop along the way. In winning a class record 11 of 12 starts this season to supplant acknowledged class icon Martin Cardenas, Beaubier also locked up Yamaha's first championship since the SportBike class came into existence in 2009.

Beaubier's slender 1.029 seconds margin of victory in Race 1 secured the series championship on Saturday. He then blew away the field in Race 2 on Sunday with a gap of 7.693 seconds. He also recorded the best lap on both days – 1:22.453 on Saturday and 1:21.916 on Sunday.

Not A Surprise

The Yamaha Extended Service/Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha rider met and surpassed expectations this season after a tantalizing 2012 campaign that saw him record seven wins. Injuries hampered him in previous years but he didn't suffer his first crash of this campaign until last Friday. "I can't thank my Y.E.S./Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha team enough for all they've done for me this season. It feel real good to get this championship for Yamaha this season," said the 20-year-old Northern Californian, now in his third campaign with Y.E.S./Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha.

Beaubier, now with nine consecutive wins, has 372 points – 128 ahead of second-place Jake Gagne in the series standings and 147 more than third-place Garrett Gerloff. JD Beach sits fourth with 196 points while Beaubier's lead over Jake Lewis and James Rispoli now stands at a whopping 200 points. That is dominance of the highest order.

Close Call

Saturday's race was one of the tougher battles Beaubier has had this season. Meen Motorsports' pilot Jake Lewis provided a stiff challenge, leading eight laps in the 23-lap race. Beaubier posted the series-clinching win in a rather pedestrian time of 32:01.645. Jake Gagne (Road Race Factory) completed the podium, followed by Bobby Fong (D&D Cycles) in fourth and Dane Westby (GEICO Motorcycle Road Racing) in fifth.

Sunday Runaway

If Saturday was a battle, Sunday was anything but as Beaubier torched the field in a sizzling 26:53.738. Y.E.S./Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha teammate Garrett Gerloff ran a distance second while D&D Cycles' Fong found the podium in third, completing a strong weekend. Benny Solis (M4 Broaster Chicken Racing) and Jason DiSalvo (Latus Motors Racing) rounded out the top five.

Final Run

The AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike Series travels to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the final round of the 2013 GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing season September 27-29.
