Laguna2010 After the race at the official press conference 3rd place Clinton Sellers on his Yamaha YZF-R6 Project 1 Atlanta team said: “I had a good weekend, my first podium. I got a decent start found a gap and moved up to 3rd place from the start. I felt like I could stay with everyone until Martin got around me and pushed me into 4th. Overall I am very pleased to be on the podium”

Steve Rapp on his Ducati 848 Team Latus Motor Racing in2nd place said: “I fought back up through the group from the beginning. We made some changes to the bike from yesterday and I was a little unsure about them as practice got cancelled this morning because of the weather and I could not test the changes. I like to normally run 5 or 6 laps to test which I was not able to do, so it took me that time to get up to speed at the beginning.  The bike stayed consistent but we did need to assure ourselves that the changes worked. 2nd is a great result.”

5 First place went to Martin Cardenas on his M4 Monster Energy Suzuki and he said: “Since my 07 debut I have always liked this track. Today is my first win here even though I have always been fast here. PConference_Sportbike_Laguna_Resize_2010 Tough race, my start was slow and this track is a hard passing circuit, but today the Suzuki was dialed in. At one point Bobby Fong had 2 seconds clear and I had to put my head down and catch him. He lost the front end in turn 1 and I was then on my own. I had a little scare with a back wheel slip coming out of 11 but overall the bike ran very well. Qualifying has not been one of my strong points lately I have only had 1 pole since this time last year but my races have always been very different results which is the main thing.”

ama_daytona_sportbike Martin Cardenas took his 6th Daytona Sportbike win of the season today at the Laguna Seca track. Cardenas was in fifth place for most of the race, but took the win after a fantastic comeback surge.

Bobby Fong looked like he was going to be the race winner for most of the day. Fong led for the majority of the race, and by lap 12 he had a three second lead. But Cardenas turned on the speed at the midway point, and gained a second per lap until he was putting heavy pressure on Fong. Fong ended up crashing, leaving Cardenas an easy route to victory.

Title leader Josh Herrin also took a spill today, giving both Cardenas and Danny Eslick a valuable opportunity to move up on the leaderboard. Herrin still leads, but he is now only one point ahead of Eslick, and Cardenas has closed within striking distance, only 12 points back.

USGP Weekend – AMA Pro SuperSport Practice at Laguna Seca PDF Print E-mail
Written by J.C. Current
Sunday, 25 July 2010 00:00

USGP10_AMASS_HNash_01 The USGP weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on California’s Monterey Peninsula is always moving at a fast pace x– everything is quick here, except the autograph and food kiosk lines. The weekend began as normal with only a few notable changes to the standard event schedule. The first major change was the running of a one-off event known as the Monterey Challenge (though, they had practice, qualifying and the race all in one morning), which contains many AMA Pro regulars – mostly privateers - who are from the local area. Next was the addition of the FIM e-Power International Championship practice, a true first at Laguna Seca. The AMA Pro SuperSport practice was held during what would normally be the lunch break, which was obviously curtailed to fit everything in today.

AMA Pro SuperSport Rider Elena Myers Starting off the practice were 32 of 33 registered riders who were all very much ready to put some rubber down for the first time this weekend. The AMA Pro SuperSport field is designed to be a step up for young (under 18 years of age) club racers who wish to jump up into the AMA Pro Racing classes. Notable entries in the 2010 season are Elena Myers, the first female to win an AMA Pro race at Infineon Raceway earlier this year. Another well-known name is that of Cameron Beaubier who was recently in the Red Bull Rookies Cup (RBRC) series held at some rounds of the MotoGP Championship series. Another name you may know from the RBRC is young Californian Joey Pascarella. But, the star of today’s practice has to be relative unknown Austin DeHaven, who took the lead early in practice and only lost out briefly at the mid-way point to Myers.

Throughout the last half of the practice, the numbers on the leader board changed only a few times. Dehaven was rock AMA Pro SuperSport Rider Joey Pascarella steady in first position eventually turning a 1:30.478 lap time. A mere half-second behind him for almost the entire practice was the #25 of Pascarella. Third and fourth place were occupied by Tyler O’Hara and Scott Gilbert until the final laps of practice; by the time the checkered flag was out indicating the end of the practice, it was Beaubier and Tomas Puerta, respectively, who took those slots. In the final order Myers had fallen from her one-time first place position to seventh, but she had plenty of good laps so that she averaged out at around fifth position. This is just the first practice…qualifying will likely change that order a bit.

So ended the first AMA Pro SuperSport practice of the 23 – 25 July 2010 weekend; tomorrow, look forward to more news on the series and the promising young talent vying for the Championship.

Final after first AMA Pro SuperSport Practice:

1. Austin Dehaven (Yamaha) 1:30.478 AMA Pro SuperSport Rider Tomas Puerta
2. Joey Pascarella (Yamaha) 1:30.761
3. Cameron Beaubier (Yamaha) 1:31.144

Captain America Returns - Bostrom Takes Pole Position PDF Print E-mail

ama_bolstrom Ben Bostrom earned the nickname Captain America after a series of phenomenal finishes at his home track at Laguna Seca. Bostrom returned to his old ways as he scorched his way around the track to beat Tommy Hayden and Josh Hayes in the final qualifying session, to earn the pole position in Sunday's race.

Bostrom earned his first AMA Superbike victory as a wild card entry at Laguna Seca in 1999, and since then, he has earned half of his world or national Superbike wins at the circuit.

Behind Bostrom was Josh Hayes, who has been consistently toward the top of the timesheets throughout the season. Hayes' biggest rivalry, Tommy Hayden, couldn't match the pace of the top two and finished fifth for the day behind Jake Holden and Larry Pegram.

But Hayden's first qualifying session was strong enough to earn him a front row spot, dropping Pegram into fifth for the AMA Superbike Race.

ama_roadracing AMA Superbike: The first qualifying session of the AMA Superbike at Laguna Seca saw a new rider at the top of the time sheets. The AMA Superbike has been dominated by Tommy Hayden and Josh Hayes as of late, but Ben Bostrom of Pat Clark Motorsports was the fastest around the track today during the first qualifying session.

Bostrom finished with a 1'24.552 time, just a tenth of a second ahead of Hayden, and three tenths faster than Hayes.

Jake Holden finished fourth, followed by the other Bostrom, Eric in fifth.

AMA Daytona Sportbike: In the Sportbike category, the two top spots were taken by Team Graves Yamaha, with Josh Herrin at the top of the time sheets, and Tommy Aquino just below in second.

Steve Rapp took the third place spot ahead of Bobby Fong and Cory West.

AMA Supersport: Tommy Puerta won the supersport qualifying session, and sets himself up at the front of the grid for the race later today. Puerta was followed by Tyler O'Hara and Austin Dehaven.

ama_cardenas AMA Superbike: Tommy Hayden set the tone during the first free practice session for the AMA Superbike at the Laguna Seca track, but in what has become the trend this Superbike season, Josh Hayes was close behind in second.

Hayes holds a slight lead in the overall series, leading Hayden by four points with 285. But Hayden was the quickest at the free practice session, finishing with a 1:24.988 time, outpacing two MotoGP riders, including little brother Roger.

Hayes finished less than three tenths of a second behind Hayden, setting up another epic battle on race day.

But don't count out the rest of the AMA Superbike pack. The top ten riders during today's free practice session were all within one second of one another.

Daytona Sportbike
- Josh Herrin topped the time sheets for the Daytona Sportbike riders, a half a second ahead of Steve Rapp.

Martin Cardenas finished in third. Cardenas will go for his second pole position of his career tomorrow. His only other pole position came last year at Laguna Seca.

AMA Supersport - Austin Dehaven was the quickest in the Supersport division. He was followed by Joe Pascarella and Cameron Beaubier.

Elena Myers, who led the session briefly at the start, finished in 7th.

ama_pro_racing

It's going to be an exciting weekend for racing as the AMA Pro Racing circuit joins the MotoGP in Monterey, California this weekend for the Red Bull USGP at the Laguna Seca track. But fans that get distracted by the influx of foreign riders at Laguna Seca will miss out on the hotly contested title fight between Josh Hayes and Tommy Hayden.

Josh Hayes currently leads the AMA Superbike, but not by much. Hayes has been switching off race wins with Hayden for the past four races, and now the two are separated by just four points. Laguna Seca will be the 7th round of the AMA Superbike, and with just four events remaining in the season, every point counts.

Jake Zemke is 40 points behind the leader, but a race win at Laguna Seca could put him right back into the title fight. Zemke has two wins so far this season, and he will be racing at his home track in Monterey, California.

The battle for the title is even tighter in the Daytona Sportbike division. Josh Herrin leads the way by only two points ahead of Danny Eslick. Martin Cardenas could also find himself at the top of the leader board at the end of the weekend. Cardenas has five race wins this season, and is just 25 points out.

ama-mid-ohio Tommy Hayden was able to hold off his biggest title contender at the second race of the AMA Superbike at Mid-Ohio. Hayden took the race two win over Josh Hayes, who won race 1. For the second event in a row, Hayden and Hayes have split race wins.

Hayden's race two victory keeps the title chase extremely close as Hayden is now only four points behind Hayes.

Larry Pegram, Ben Bolstrom, Hayden, and Hayes, were a tight four pack throughout the race, but Hayden and Hayes began to separate from the group in the final laps. Hayden kept Hayes at bay, and crossed the line .184 seconds ahead of his rival to claim his 3rd AMA Superbike victory.

Pegram and Bolstrom had a similar battle, but Pegram came out on top, narrowly racing to a third place finish.

Daytona Sportbike - Danny Eslick took Sunday's race victory for the Daytona Sportbike series, with a rare breakaway win. Eslick took the victory by almost five seconds.

Season leader Josh Herrin took a spill on the final lap while chasing Eslick for the race win. Herrin ended up with a 19 place finish, allowing Eslick to pull within two points.

Supersport - Another race, another J.D. Beach win. Beach did the double at the Mid-Ohio event, making it five race wins out of the past 6 races. Beach finished 13 seconds ahead of his Yamaha teammate Cameron Beaubier.

Hayden pulled it together in the closing laps to pass up Larry Pegram for the last spot on the podium. Hayden's third place keeps Hayes within striking distance. Hayden is now ten points behind on the overall leader board.

AMA Daytona Sportbike - Josh Herrin took the win in the Daytona Sportbike race, in a decision that came down to just .045 seconds. Herrin narrowly beat out Bobby Fong to extend his championship lead. It was Fong's first podium finish of his AMA career.

AMA Supersport

Monster Energy Suzuki Extends Holden's Contract PDF Print E-mail

ama_m4_suzuki Jake Holden has been riding for the injured John Hopkins in the AMA Pro Superbike series since the double header at the Infineon Raceway. Holden's contract with the M4 Monster Energy Suzuki team was set to expire after the Mid-Ohio race, but the team has decided to extend his contract through the Laguna Seca race weekend.

Holden has earned a top 10 finish in each of his AMA Pro Superbike races with the M4 Suzuki team, and Hopkins hasn't fully recovered.

"What we're doing right now is building strength. I've been going through the rehab and therapy five days a week and working hard," said Hopkins. "In an ideal world, I'd come back to race at Laguna Seca and get to race the same weekend as my old MotoGP compatriots but we're going to give it more time so I can come back at full health."

Until then, Holden will hold onto the reigns for the M4 team.

"Laguna is probably my favorite track to race so I am excited to get the chance on the M4 Monster Energy Suzuki GSX-R1000 there. The circuit really suits my style and I've done well there in the past," said Holden.

"I am looking forward to racing both at Laguna Seca and at Mid-Ohio. I hate it that John has been injured but we're trying to put up the best results we can. At the races so far, I've tried not to make any stupid mistakes and do a good job for the team."

ama_blake_young American Superbike rider Blake Young was injured last month during a test ride at Barber Motorsports park. Young is expected to be back in action at round 8 for the AMA Pro Racing event at the VIR circuit in August, but until then, Australian Superbike Champion Josh Waters will be filling in for the Rockstar Makita Suzuki team.

“Firstly, I would like to wish Blake a speedy recovery," Waters said in a press release. "When I got the call up, I was blown away that the team thought of me to fill in. I know it’s not going to be easy as the next two tracks are quite hard, but I know I have the best team behind me. I will try my hardest and I hope I can do a good job for Suzuki and our sponsors, and I also want to thank my Team Manager, Phil Tainton, for coming with me!”

Waters won the Australian Superbike title in his rookie year in 2009. The last person to accomplish that feat was Mat Mladin, who won in his rookie season in 1992.

Waters will not miss any rounds of the 2010 Australian Superbike series, where he will try to defend his title.

The last two members of the AMA Hall of Fame class of 2010 have just been announced. Desert racer and team manager Bruce Oglivie will be joining the other inductees at the 2010 induction ceremony at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas on November 19th, as well as two stroke tuner Eyvind Boyesen.

Oglivie and Boyesen will be joining championship team owner Mitch Payton, AMA 250cc Roadrace Champion David Emde, off-road rights activist Clark Collins, dirt-track racer Don Castro, off-road gear pioneers John and Rita Gregory, and sidecar roadrace champion Larry Coleman.

BRUCE OGLIVIE

ama_ogilvie Bruce Oglivie was a master Baja racer. He collected victories in the San Felipe 250, the Baja 500, and the Baja 1000. Oglivie's career was long and decorated. He is the only rider to have won the Baja 1000 overall in four different decades. His last win was in 2003 at the age of 51.

In 1984 Oglivie started to manage the off-road racing efforts of American Honda. Oglivie passed away on April 13th, 2009.

"So few excel at the highest levels of both competition and management, and Bruce Ogilvie was one of the greatest ever in both arenas," said Jack Penton, AMA director of operations. "Bruce's selfless nature, unique leadership abilities, incredible skill on a motorcycle and seemingly limitless knowledge regarding motorcycle development made him not only an asset to his employer, American Honda, but to the motorcycling community as a whole. Bruce embodies the spirit of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, and we're proud to have his memory grace its halls."

EYVIND BOYESEN

ama_boyesen Eyvind Boyesen is one of the most accomplished two stroke engine tuners in the history of motorsports. Boyesen engineering set the standard for off-road racers in the 1970's, and his products continue to shape off-road racing through to today.

Boyesen built his worldwide reputation on his reed-valve innovations, but Boyesen was also known for his special porting techniques, water pump design, and enhanced accelerator pump opperations. Boyesen holds more than 40 aftermarket patents in the motorcycle industry.

"Eyvind developed many of his innovations in an era of great change in performance off-road motorcycling, and in the process joined other AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers in becoming a household name in the sport," said Penton. "Both everyday riders and national champions alike used Boyesen's products over the years, and many more will in years to come."

The Women's Team, which finished eighth in the Women's division last year, welcomes back the talents of Sarah Duke and Caroline Allen.

Smage, from Elkhorn, Wis., is a four-time AMA/NATC National Trials Champion and is tied for the points lead with Webb for the 2010 title. He will be returning for his fourth trip to the TdN.

"This year should be good," said Smage, who will ride a Sherco. "I'm glad I'm on the team this year. We should have a legitimate shot at getting a podium and potentially a shot at the win. I rode in Poland in 2007, riding the 125 line, so this should be a little tougher this year. I've had a lot more practice since then and feel a more confident."

The 19-year-old Smage is a veteran at international competition. In addition to the TdN, he has competed in various world rounds since 2007.

"I have a couple wins in the 125 class and one in the junior class," Smage said. "It's a different game over there. It's more mental than here. There are so many good riders that it's hard to go in and expect to excel. They have different techniques about how they go about their day, how they ride each section and how much time they take. Here, we could spend an hour in the first section, waiting for someone to go first. There, they go right away and they keep moving. Other riders try to get in front of you. There are bottlenecks. The pace is a lot quicker."

Webb, from Watsonville, Calif., will ride a Gas Gas in Italy. Wineland is from Fountain, Colo. He is third in the national points chase and will ride a Gas Gas at the TdN.

On the Women's Team, Duke, from Colorado Springs, Colo., is returning for her seventh TdN, and Allen, from Norton, Mass., will make her fourth trip to the event. Both will ride Gas Gas bikes at the TdN.

The sport of trials involves riders navigating their motorcycles over seemingly impossible terrain. The Trial des Nations began in Europe in 1983 as a way to bring the best trials riders from each country together to compete as teams, and it has evolved into one of the most anticipated trials events of the year. Each competing country fields two teams: a men's team consisting of four riders and a women's team consisting of three riders.

Coleman-Andrews The AMA has announced the 7th member of the 2010 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Class. Larry Coleman, a three time AMA Sidecar Racing National Champion, will be inducted into the AMA HOF this November.

"Motorcycle racing is one of the most diverse motorsports in the world, and sidecar racing is further evidence of that," said AMA Director of Operations and Hall of Famer Jack Penton. "One of the best ever at this unique and exciting discipline is Larry Coleman -- a three-time champ who really took the sport to new levels."

Coleman started as sidecar passenger in the 1970's, but after two seasons he moved on to pilot his own machine. Coleman raced a Kawasaki 500 H1 with Wendell Andrews, and experienced success in both AFM and AA racing.

Coleman and Andrews won the AMA National championships in 1976 and 77. Coleman won again in 1979.

"I'm really in awe," Coleman said. "I've been to Pickerington, and read all the names on the wall. Being in the company of those people is such an honor. I don't think there's any finer honor than to be judged by your peers, and this is just amazing."
