Jorge Lorenzo wasn’t always at the top during today’s MotoGP race in Jerez, but with the checkered flags in site, Lorenzo made one final lunge to claim victory in front of his home crowd. Lorenzo dropped down to fifth at the beginning of the race, but managed to work his way back up the rankings to claim the top spot on the podium with just a half lap to go.
Pole winner Dani Pedrosa started the race in the lead, and was able to lead the pack throughout most of the race today, and with 6 laps to go, Pedrosa had a two second lead on both Valentino Rossi and Lorenzo. Rossi wasn’t able to catch Pedrosa, but his teammate Lorenzo was able to cut off a half second at each lap until he passed Pedrosa to claim his sixth career victory. Rossi, who is riding with an injured shoulder, got slowly faster throughout the weekend, finally breaking into the podium when it counted.
Pedrosa moves into the top spot on the overall leader board. Rossi slides back into second place, four points behind the leader, and Pedrosa makes a big step on the leader board, to claim third position.
Nicky Hayden and Casey Stoner close out the top five.

At the end of the qualifying in Jerez, Dani Pedrosa secured the pole position for Sunday’s Gran Premio bwin de Espana. But tomorrow’s MotoGP race is bound to be tight as all top ten qualifiers finished within .9 seconds of one another.
Pedrosa was competitive throughout the day, but it wasn’t until his 23rd of 25 laps that he took the lead ahead of Jorge Lorenzo. The Spanish duo gave the Jerez crowd something to cheer about with their 1-2 finish.
Ducati Marlboro rider Casey Stoner rode into third. Stoner was just .04 seconds off of the tail of Lorenzo, who was .285 seconds behind Pedrossa.
Valentino Rossi will start the second row of the grid, coming in fourth behind Stoner. Nicky Hayden, who suffered a crash during the second free practice, bounced back for a fifth place finish. Randy de Puniet completes the second row, and places the top six riders within .4 seconds of on another.
Colin Edwards and Ben Spies took the next two spots in 7th and 8th, and the top ten was finished off by Andrea Dovizioso and Marco Melandri.

After a disappointing round at Qatar, Casey Stoner starts the weekend at Jerez the best way possible with the fastest time during the first free practice session. The Ducati Marlboro rider crashed out of contention at Qatar, but is looking to make up some MotoGP points at Jerez as he sets himself up for a solid weekend. Stoner set a best lap of 1’39.721 during the first free practice session before sliding out with two minutes to go. No injuries resulted from the fall.
Jorge Lorenzo was next across the finish line. The Fiat Yamaha rider was just over a tenth of a second behind Stoner. Nicky Hayden, Stoner’s Ducati Marlboro teammate, finished off the podium, .4 seconds behind pace.
Dani Pedrossa completed an impressive lap around the track in front of his home crowd at the Gran Premio bwin de Espana, putting the Repsol Honda team in fourth place, a half a second behind Stoner.
In fifth, came the battered Valentino Rossi. Rossi is still feeling the affects of a shoulder and hand injury he sustained shortly after his win at Qatar. Fellow Italian Loris Capirossi, Rizla Suzuki, came in 6th.
The top 6 riders were all within one second of Stoner. Monster Yamaha rider Colin Edwards was the first American across the finish line in 7th, followed by Hector Barbera (Paginas Amarillas Aspar) Avaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) and Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini) to complete the top ten.
