The 2010 Isle of Man TT has attracted some of the biggest motorcycle manufacturers in the world. Last week, KTM announced that they will make their debut at the 2010 IOM, and now, established road-racing manufacturer BMW has announced that they will be competing in this years IOM competition.
“It’s really exciting to see the return of such a prestigious marque to the Isle of Man TT,” said Martyn Quayle, the Tourism and Leisure Minister of IOM. “Their involvement in the 2010 races is a great boost to an already strong list of manufacturers – more evidence that the TT is going from strength to strength.”
BMW first competed in the TT way back in 1937. They have won over 30 races at the TT, but they haven’t won, or competed, in a race since the late 1970s. The German manufacturer joins the TT after a successful run during last years World Superbike Championships.
BMW will be running their S1000RR in both the Superbike and the Senior TT races. Germany’s Rico Penzkofer will be in the saddle of the S1000RR, and is expected to be a serious contender.
Penzkofer came in fifth at last year’s Macau Grand Prix, had an impressive debut at the TT last year in the Supersport category, and has won the World Endurance Championship.
“To be representing BMW on their return to the TT is a tremendous honor for me and after my debut last year I can’t wait to return to the Mountain Course,” said Penzkofer. “Riding the Superbike will obviously present a new challenge, but the bike is superb and that, combined with my own improved knowledge of the course, should see us able to make a good impression.” |

Not all motorcycle races can claim more than a hundred years of track time, but not all motorcycles races are the Isle of Man TT. Tradition, however, is not all that the Isle of Man is about. It is also about innovation.
The Isle of Man TT is one of the first, and one of the premiere, electric motorcycle races. It is also slowly building its roster from the biggest names in motorcycle racing. Chris Palmer is the latest name to be added to that list.
Palmer has won three Isle of Man TT events and holds two track records. He will be racing for the Swedish Electric Racing Team (SERT), on a modified CBR600RR. The motorcycle was bought from Anthony West who used it while racing for the now defunct, Stiggy Racing World Suberbike team.

KTM has long been known for their off-road capabilities, but in recent years, they have also shown their road-racing muscle. They participated in the Austrian and German Superbike Championships in 2009, and now, KTM will try their hand at the legendary TT races.
It may be KTM’s first TT, but James Edmeades, who will pilot the Austrian machine, has three Isle of Man events under his belt. Edmeades will be riding KTM’s flagship RC8R Superbike.
“The opportunity to become the first KTM rider at the Isle of Man TT Races is a tremendous honour for me,” said Edmeades. “After the three great years I enjoyed between 2006 and 2008, I can’t wait to get back on the Island. The KTM RC8R is a superb bike and I’m sure it will perform well around the course with its excellent handling qualities.”
KTM will be joining the likes of Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki on the TT grid. They will also be facing off against Suzuki, who will be celebrating their 50th year at the Isle of Man.
KTM will be participating in three events at the Isle of Man, the Superbike, the Superstock, and the Senior TT Races.

Another first for the Isle of Man TTIsle of Man TT Press Release Just five months after the world debut of TTXGP at the 2009 Isle of Man TT, the manufacturing arm of the organizers will unveil the world’s first production electric racing superbike.
In June this year, history was made when the legendary Isle of Man TT course played host to the first zero-carbon, low-emission motorcycle race. It created a global phenomenon and increased interest in electric-powered racing. It has now been confirmed that the Mavizen TTX02, from TTXGP’s manufacturing arm, will be officially unveiled at the SEMA show in Las Vegas on November 3. Isle of Man Local Government and the Environment Minister John Shimmin, who will perform the unveiling, said: ‘I am very delighted that the Isle of Man and, in particular, our internationally-renowned TT festival, has played such a leading role in bringing TTXGP to the world. The Island prides itself on being a pioneering nation with an independent outlook and a keen spirit of adventure – qualities recognized by the founders of TTXGP as they sought to showcase the world’s first clean emissions motorcycle grand prix.’ ‘Revolutionary ideas are required to push back boundaries in the pursuit of improved performance and breakthroughs are achieved by taking risks and embracing innovation. TTXGP represents a significant step in the transition away from carbon-based fuels and, with continued commitment, co-operation and investment, the future of eco motorsport looks very exciting.’ TTXGP founder Azhar Hussain added: ‘TTXGP brought a whole new aspect to the Isle of Man TT. The event was turned around in months and it was a tribute to the dedication and commitments of the teams and the Isle of Man Government that we produced a world class event, attracting teams from across the globe.’ ‘John Shimmin was particularly instrumental in making it happen and it is only fitting that he should be here at another world first – the unveiling of the bike that is going to make green racing accessible.’ ‘The Mavizen TTX02, gives potential participants a chance to acquire a bike that they can develop themselves to make it competitive and unique to them. Racing is brutal, but at least with the Mavizen TTX02, the racers can start with a proven platform.’ Production of the Mavizen TTX02 will be limited to 50 units, available for delivery in the first quarter of 2010. You can register your interest at www.mavizen.com |

McGuinness, who led from start to finish, moving ahead of TT legend Mike Hailwood in the list of all-time victors, was presented the winner’s garland by eight-time MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi. “Hailwood was the rider everyone talked about,” said McGuinness. “I never thought I would be mentioned in the same breath. Cummins says TT beyond his wildest dreamsIsle of Man TT Official Press Release
Manxman Conor Cummins says his performance at the 2009 Isle of Man TT was ‘beyond my wildest dreams’. The 23 year old claimed his first TT podiums during a hectic week of racing around the legendary 37.73-mile Mountain course. After a far from ideal start to race week, Cummins enjoyed an incredible close to the 2009 TT. Racing McAdoo Kawasakis, the Ramsey man took third in the second Relentless Supersport race and a magnificent second in the Pokerstars Senior TT. He also record his fastest ever lap of the TT course, an incredible average speed of 130.225mph on the fourth lap of the Senior TT. Not only did that lap confirm his place as fastest Manxman, it also makes him the third fastest rider in the history of the TT and one of only three riders to break the magical 130mph barrier in racing. Cummins made good use of perfect conditions in practice week, finishing seventh in the superbike class and eighth in Superstock. |

HM Plant Honda’s Steve Plater roared to victory in a dramatic and extraordinary Pokerstars Senior TT to bring an end to a fabulous festival of racing on the Mountain circuit. The blue riband event of the 2009 Isle of Man TT saw incredible, record-breaking pace and heavy attrition as just 29 riders finished. After a 30 minute delay following a brief rain shower, racing got under way at 2.30pm and it was obvious 15-times TT winner John McGuinness was determined to take his fifth Senior victory in a row. He smashed his own outright lap record from a standing start on lap one, completing the circuit at an average of 130.953mph. His Honda teammate Steve Plater overcome his pattern of a slow opening lap to also pass the previous lap record with a 130.490mph and secure second. Isle of Man TT: John McGuinness takes win, sets new race recordIsle of Man TT Press
The blistering race action of the Dainese Superbike TT more than made up for the disappointment of Saturday’s program being postponed due to rain. There was no one to challenge John McGuinness, as the HM Plant Honda rider dominated all six laps to take the win, set a new outright lap record and set a new race record. His only real challenger was teammate Steve Plater, but McGuinness controlled the pace to take a comfortable win. Plater finished second, with Guy Martin third. It was a great celebration of Honda’s 50th anniversary of racing, the Japanese giant taking all three spots on the podium. The top three were garlanded by MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi, who watched the race and is now on his lap of the TT course with fellow GP legend Giacomo Agostini. McGuinness is now a 15-times TT winner, and set three 130 mph+ laps on his way to victory – including a new outright lap record of 130.442 mph on lap two, despite slowing down to pit. |

The star of Thursday night practice Cameron Donald and Manxman Conor Cummins were the first away. After Cummins came through with an average speed of 127.020mph, Honda-mounted Gary Johnson upped the pace with a 127.794mph. |

Isle of Man TT: The Greatest Motorcycle Show on EarthBy Olaf Wolff Sr. Staff Writer
You are forbidden to dream about becoming a motorcycle road-racing legend, or to refer to yourself as having been as such, without first validating your cajone status, and pitting your entire skill-set against the 37.75 miles of public roads that form the legendary TT circuit. Granted this is an unwritten law, enforced by purists, yet, that in no way demises the vivacity with which it’s upheld.
During more unruffled times, when motorcycle racers were household names and the TT was the zenith of the international two-wheel calendar, the entry list read like a who’s who of motorcycling legends: Woods, Guthrie, Simpson, Duke, McIntyre, Surtees, Hailwood, Ubbiali, Agostini, Redman and Read. |
