Gravity Slashers: High Flying Action PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 13 March 2010 07:44

Gravity Slashers There’s something equally scary and intriguing about a motorcycle propelling 50 feet into the air inside an arena.

And after looking at the thousands in attendance, this feeling seemed equally spread across the spectators in the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. last weekend.

Talk about a stunt show…Gravity Slashers brought some intense freestyle motocross to the arena, along with some extra styles of riding; each rider putt on their best possible performance due to the show being the penultimate round of 26 nights of competition.

Gravity Slashers There’s no better way to spend a weekend than to catch some high-flying freestyle motocross action as the Gravity Slashers Freestyle Motocross tour comes to the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Friday, March 5 and Saturday, March 6 for two intense nights of competition.

The event is the penultimate stop of the 2010 Gravity Slashers tour that will visit 16 arenas in 14 states for 26 nights of competition.

Riders will converge at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza to battle head-to-head for the top spot on the podium. The state-of-the-art facility will be transformed into a freestyle motocross playground complete with two different jumps, each measuring more than 65 feet in distance! The riders have only 45 feet to build up enough speed before hitting the ramp and propelling themselves close to 50 feet up in the air. And if that isn’t enough of a challenge, the riders will be judged on the execution of acrobatic tricks such as backflips, Hart Attacks, Cliffhangers, Tsunamis and Sterilzers, just to name a few.

J.J. Romans (Flagstaff, Ariz.) has separated himself from the rest of the field in the wins category but other world-class riders trying to knock him out of the “Hot Seat” include, Adam Cousino (Bristol, Vt.), Ben Veyna (Las Vegas, Nev.), Jason Rowe (Chicago, Ill.), John Distler (Gilbert, Ariz.), Justin Stoltzfus (Honey Brook, Pa.) Paul Smith (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada) and Vince Morgan (St. Johns, Ariz.)

Tricks start flying at 7:30 p.m. for both  shows. Tickets are available through www.Ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster outlets, the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza box office or charge by phone at (800) 745-3000.

Adult tickets start at just $15.00, and kids tickets start at only $5.00! Service charges, facility and handling fees may apply. All ticket prices are $2 more when purchased on the day of show.

Keep track of all the latest Freestyle Motocross news on www.GravitySlashers.com and be sure to get your tickets early because Gravity Slashers will no doubt be the biggest show in town!

Motorcycle Daredevil Bubba Blackwell: Back for More PDF Print E-mail

Bubba Blackwell Crashes while jumping 22 cars This summer, the legendary motorcycle daredevil Bubba Blackwell will re-attempt to break his own record for most cars jumped at New Hampshire’s Rockingham Park on June 12, 2010.

Blackwell’s bike of choice? The iconic Harley-Davidson XR750, the same make Evel Knievel used in his legendary career. The motorcycle stuntman will use this machine while attempting to clear 22 Ford Focus cars.

He attempted the same motorcycle stunt in 2001, but failed, almost dying in the attempt. He crashed around 70 mph, the accident breaking 19 bones, crushing his right shoulder and collapsing both of his lungs;  Blackwell was placed in a coma and on Life Support.

Dirt-to-Dirt Record Set by Ryan Capes PDF Print E-mail

Ryan Capes ses new world record Last month, motorcycle stuntman Ryan Capes set a new world record as he jumped 290 feet off a dirt ramp to a dirt landing. He is now the closest motorcycle daredevil to reach a dirt-to-dirt jump of 300 feet.

Capes rode a modified Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki KX 500 during the jump at a speed just under 100 mph.

“Fifth gear tapped out at 98 miles per hour and I’m leaning back off the back fender like I’m riding through sand,” said Capes. “It was pretty hairy with lots of wheel spin.”

Capes made the 290-feet leap at Supercross icon Jeremy McGrath’s ranch. This was the same ramp used for Johnny Greaves' record setting 301 foot jump in his Monster Energy/Toyota truck just days earlier. The Greaves' jump was the first time a four-wheel vehicle has covered the distance.

The 300-feet dirt-to-dirt mark has yet to be broken by a two-wheel vehicle, but when it is, it is likely to be Capes who does it.

“I was the first guy to jump 300 feet ramp-to-dirt, the first to jump 300 feet ramp-to-ramp and plan on being the first to jump 300 feet dirt-to-dirt,” said Capes.

Son Vows to Complete Evel Knievel's Final Stunt PDF Print E-mail

Robbie Knievel vows to complete his father Evel Knievel’s final stunt

Evel KnievelThirty-five years ago, Evel Knievel’s career came to an end after failing to clear 13 London buses in Wembley. After wrecking his Harley-Davidson XR-750 before 90,000 people, the daredevil Evel broke his pelvis.

His son Robbie Knievel recently announced he wants to complete the same jump in 2010, but instead of 13 buses, he’ll do 16. But don’t think Robbie will be driving a newer machine; nope, he’ll be driving an older model XR 750, the same make of bike his dad wrecked back in 1975.

“Daredevils are a dying breed,” Robbie told the UK press. “I’m proud to have been raised by one and to be one myself. I’m looking forward to this and, although my dad’s jump ended with broken bones and a lot of pain, I’m confident he'll be smiling down on this one.”

Robbie said his team is considering performing the stunt at the Battersea Power Station in South London, with a tentative date of May 22, 2010. But they are willing to change the date if it’s possible to perform the stunt at Wembley stadium.

If all goes well, Robbie also plans to also jump the Snake River Canyon. The 1600-feet gap in Idaho was attempted by Evel on a rocket-powered “Sky Cycle” in 1974, but the parachute accidentally opened when Evel launched, and strong headwinds blew Evel 600 feet down into the canyon. Miraculously, Evel walked away with minor injuries.

Learning to wheelie has never been so easy

Julian Taylor
Editor-In-Chief

Wheelie Teach

If you are like me, every time a professional does a wheelie and keeps it going for ages you wish you could do it.

You have probably tried to get the front wheel of your bike off the ground by holding the clutch in, blipping the accelerator and holding your breath while you let the clutch quickly out. You know all the time if it does come up too quickly and your bike starts to go too far you might lose everything. But you keep trying.

Well don’t worry, I have found a product that enables you to wheelie on your own bike without the worry of flipping it, the Wheelie Teach.
